At Cromwell Community College it is our aim to identify and support all of our young carers. A young carer is a child under 18 who regularly helps to look after a family member or friend who is disabled, ill, has a mental health condition or addiction problem.
Children may engage in:
- Practical tasks (cooking, housework and shopping)
- Physical care (lifting or helping someone use the stairs)
- Personal care (dressing, washing, helping with toilet needs)
- Managing the family budget (collecting benefits and prescriptions)
- Managing medication
- Looking after younger siblings
- Helping someone communicate
The College is committed to meeting the needs of young carers so they can attend and enjoy school in the same way as other pupils and achieve their potential.
Cromwell has designated young carers’ school leads (see details below) with responsibility for young carers and their families. Pupils are made aware of these staff and how to contact them to access support. The College actively seeks feedback and ideas from all pupils, including young carers, to shape and improve support.
Cromwell has a very effective referral system and strong partnership in place with relevant external agencies including the school nurse and the local young carers’ service at Centre 33. Where appropriate information is shared with professionals and other agencies on a need to know basis in order for possible further support to be accessed. Cromwell also offers the opportunity for Young Carers to attend a daily Breakfast Club from 8.15am onwards. This gives pupils the chance to socialise with other Young Carers and pupils. As well, they can access additional provision prior to the start of the school day.
You can also visit Carers Trust Cambridgeshire for information on news and events in the area.

Cromwell Community College is one of very few schools in the country who has been awarded the Young Carers in School Gold Award. Such an award reflects that we aim to meet the needs of this vulnerable pupil group and this was recognised by Ofsted during our last inspection.
Please remember that if any of our Young Carers have any queries or concerns, or require support of any kind in school, our Young Carer email address is email@example.com. Alternatively they can also contact one of the staff named above for additional support.
