Year 10


Year 10 is an important year in any pupil’s time at Cromwell, they have already made important decisions about the courses they want to study and have begun a personal journey to academic success.

Being in Year 10 can be a challenging and stressful time for pupils, the workload increases, the pressure mounts to get coursework completed on time and to perform well in exams. Pupils enjoy taking part in extra-curricular activities and taking on more personal responsibility. The roles of form captain, games captain and student representative on year and school councils offers opportunities for taking on personal responsibility. Towards the end of the year, pupils also have opportunities to join our highly successful mentoring scheme and to apply to become prefects. Pupils are rewarded in a variety of ways for their good work, effort, attitude and behaviour and for excellent attendance.

Fortunately, Year 10 pupils have a fantastic team around them to help them cope with these challenges and offer support and guidance. This team starts with the people that they see every day, their forms tutors. Some have been attached to their tutees since they began their time at Cromwell. They know your sons and daughters well and can recognise when they may need a helping hand. Miss Reeve has been Head of Year to this year group since Year 7 and therefore knows them very well.

Year 10 weekly tutor time programme

Form time is a 20 minute daily slot where pupils spend time in their form groups with their Form Tutor. There is a programme that is followed weekly to enable the development of pupils’ interpersonal skills and knowledge of the world. The Year 10 programme includes:

  • Personal development (PD) will start at 2pm on a Wednesday in the week 1 timetable. Pupils will follow a programme of activities which develop their personal, learning and thinking skills and the social, emotional aspects of learning.
  • A full year group assembly is taken by the Head of year or a member of the middle management team on one day of the week. The themes for the assemblies are linked to current events both in and out of school with a view to widening the pupil’s horizons. Each form group also takes an assembly once a year, they are given a theme and have to produce and assembly as a group and present it to the entire year group. Assemblies provide and opportunity to celebrate success, to learn together about current affairs and to recognise important events in the annual calendar.
  • Form tutors and pupils should select a news story which can be local, national or international for HIGNFY (Have I Got News For You) day. In order to help meet some of the cross curricular aspects of citizenship, some of the stories selected focus on political stories and events. Pupils should be encouraged to suggest news stories and lead discussions. These sessions can also be used as preparation time for the form led assemblies.
  • PIXL Edge is an online programme which focuses on Leadership, Organisation, Resilience, Initiative and Communication.
  • During admin day pupils work on a variety of items such as celebrating as a form group and individual successes. In the first two weeks of each term these slots should focus on the selection and election of form/games captains. It also allows time for form tutors to speak individually to any pupils whom they are concerned about or who need extra support.
  • Quiz day see’s the form groups complete a current affairs quiz, as a team/. The slot enables groups to learn and discuss an important issue in the news. Forms compete with each other termly to win a form group prize.

Personal Development

Pupils are taught PD by their form tutors. The following topics are covered in year 10:

  • Relationships including families
  • Stereotypes, prejudice and discrimination
  • Power of positive thinking
  • Responsible consumerism
  • Influences
  • Personal finance
  • Information advice and guidance, including a post 16/18 convention
  • Interview and CV writing techniques, including a one to one interview with an employer
  • Health and safety at work
  • E safety
  • Homelessness
  • Same sex relationships
  • Drugs and the law

Pupils will also have the opportunity of to study and explore these further with the collapse PD days. These days often involve external companies or speakers coming into the college to work with the pupils.

Key Events


Work Experience

Work Experience takes place during the last few weeks of year 10 (in July). Pupils go on a two week placement into a place of work, during this time they are expected to carry out a variety of jobs in that work place just as an employee of the company is expected to complete, work the same hours and adhere to the work place rules. Cromwell view work experience as an important part of the curriculum for all pupils as it gives them experience in being independent, how to adapt to new people and situations, as well as allowing them to develop the skills needed for the world of work. Work experience can also help pupils with their thoughts on future plans and careers.

Prefect and Ambassador Applications

Towards the end of Year 10, pupils will have the opportunity to apply for a Post of Responsibility: as a Prefect or as an Ambassador. Pupils will need to complete an application form and then pupils will be selected for interview. The Form Tutors, Head of Year  (Mr Mills) and Director of Learning (Mr Russell) will carry out the interviews. A team of Prefects and Ambassadors will be selected, following this process. Any outstanding pupils at interview will be asked to take part in a further interview for the much coveted positions of Junior Head Boy and Junior Head Girl. Pupils may apply for more than one position but must complete the application form by the deadlines given out in assembly.

Amabassador positions include Mentors, members of the Prom Committee and members of the Yearbook Committee. The Prom Committee take the lead on planning, organising and fundraising for the year 11 prom. The Yearbook Committee take the lead on writing the Year 11 yearbook, liaising with local businesses and marketing their publication within the College. The Mentors are trained in school to play a leading role in mentoring younger pupils.

Progress files

A progress file is produced by pupils during year 10 and is added to throughout year 11. The progress file is a record of any achievements of qualifications that pupils have gained throughout their time at Cromwell. The progress file should not just include school based achievements and qualifications as the idea of progress files is that it gives information on the whole pupil. Pupils will take these progress files with them to post 16 interviews whether they are here at Cromwell, other colleges or sixth forms and potential employers to demonstrate their strengths and achievements.
