Young Carers

At Cromwell Community College it is our aim to identify and support all of our young carers.  A young carer is a child under 18 who regularly helps to look after a family member or friend who is disabled, ill, has a mental health condition or addiction problem.

Children may engage in:

  • Practical tasks (cooking, housework and shopping)
  • Physical care (lifting or helping someone use the stairs)
  • Personal care (dressing, washing, helping with toilet needs)
  • Managing the family budget (collecting benefits and prescriptions)
  • Managing medication
  • Looking after younger siblings
  • Helping someone communicate

The College is committed to meeting the needs of young carers so they can attend and enjoy school in the same way as other pupils and achieve their potential.

Cromwell has designated young carers’ school leads (see details below) with responsibility for young carers and their families.  Pupils are made aware of these staff and how to contact them to access support.  The College actively seeks feedback and ideas from all pupils, including young carers, to shape and improve support.

Cromwell has a very effective referral system and strong partnership in place with relevant external agencies including the school nurse and the local young carers’ service at Centre 33. Where appropriate information is shared with professionals and other agencies on a need to know basis in order for possible further support to be accessed.

You can also visit Carers Trust Cambridgeshire for information on news and events in the area.
